SAAD

Graduated: Northside College Preparatory High School, Chicago
Attending: Yale University
Career or Major Interest: Classics/Molecular Biology

  • Passionate about bridging cultural divides, Saad became a leader in both the Muslim Student Association and the Jewish Student Union at his school
  • After realizing how enriched his life was from learning Latin and the Classics, Saad tutored other under-resourced students at his high school and local elementary school in Latin
  • coring in the 99th percentile on his ACT, Saad will be the first in his family to attend college

MICHELLE

Graduated: Walter Payton High School, Chicago
Attending: Bowdoin College
Career or Major Interest: Doctor

  • Highly responsible after helping her working parents raise two younger siblings, Michelle will be the first in her family to attend college
  • A long-time volunteer at a free cancer support clinic, Michelle is passionate about becoming a doctor
  • elected to intern with a University of Chicago biology professor in his lab as a high school student 

“I’VE HAD ADULTS AROUND ME TO GIVE ME SUGGESTIONS BUT I’VE NEVER HAD A TRUE MENTOR TO GUIDE, ENCOURAGE AND INSPIRE ME. HAVING A GREENHOUSE SCHOLARS MENTOR AND OTHER SCHOLARS TO FORM A PEER SUPPORT NETWORK IS AN OPPORTUNITY I WOULD NOT WASTE.”

Attending: University of Illinois
Career or Major Interest: Food Science and Human Nutrition

  • Lobbied for changes in how his school administration informs parents and students of school news, including establishing a Facebook presence for his school
  • Passionate about the issues of nutrition and childhood obesity in his community, Nick interned for a food research program at the University of Illinois
  • eceived the Cook County Sheriff’s Youth Service Medal of Honor for his volunteerism in his community

Career or Major Interest: Biology

  • Growing up in foster care, Swami became a passionate advocate for vulnerable kids and was elected Vice President of the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services Youth Advisory Board
  • Certified as a Teen Counselor through Strengthening Families Illinois and chair of an annual Youth Summit for children in foster care
  • Graduating in the 98th percentile in his class, Swami will be the first in his family to go to college
